A Cave Hotel in Matera, Italy - One of the most unique hotel experiences in the world

Some hotels give you a room. This hotel gives you a piece of history.
Opened in 1996 as the first hotel in Matera's Sassi district, it's built from cave dwellings dating back to the 1500s. But Matera itself and its caves are are presumed to have had human activity already 9000-10000 years ago.
Which makes it one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the world. Imagine that!

We stayed in one of the cave rooms with a private balcony, and it's genuinely one of the best experiences we've ever had, cool stone walls carved straight from the rock and a balcony view over the rooftops of the Sassi to the Cathedral beyond.

If you don't have a balcony, you can still enjoy the views from their aperitivo and at breakfast.
Rooms vary in size and light depending on the original dwelling they're carved from, so it's worth specifically requesting a cave room with a balcony.
