Flåm Norway Things to do

If you're searching for the ultimate Europe must-visit destination, Flåm belongs at the top of the list.

At the end of the Aurlandsfjord, this tiny Norwegian village delivers the kind of mountain scenery that looks almost too perfect to be real: lush mountains dropping straight into deep-blue water, waterfalls, and a silence that's only broken by the occasional train whistle.

I’ve been here several times and it has become one of my favorite spots for a Norwegian escape. Here's everything you need to know for your own trip, where to stay, what to do and where to eat.

How to travel to Flåm

Why Flåm Belongs on Your Norway Travel List

Flåm is small, you could walk the entire village in ten minutes, but it will leave you with unforgettable memories. It's home to the Flåm Railway, one of the most scenic trains in Europe and sits at the base of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the famous, and Norway’s longest, Sognefjord.

For anyone planning a Norway vacation built around nature travel, mountain views, and a slower pace, this is exactly the kind of place worth building your itinerary around.

Best Places to Stay in Flåm

Fretheim Hotel is the classic choice. A historic hotel with cozy rooms, delicious breakfast, mountain views and a fjord-facing restaurant. Flåm railway is located right outside (if you're lucky you can watch it from your window.) and this hotel offers an atmosphere that makes you want to slow down immediately. I've stayed here several times and highly recommend it! Book Fretheim Hotel here.

For a quieter base just a short drive or boat ride away in neighboring Aurland, Aurlandsfjord Hotel is a great alternative. Book Aurlandsfjord Hotel Here.

6 Things to Do in Flåm and Aurland

Flåm offers a wide variety of incredible things to do. I've gathered 7 of my favourite things, perhaps this can be inspiration for your own trip.

  1. Ride the Flåm Railway

One of the most scenic trains in the world. Dramatic landscapes, waterfalls and valley views while sitting in a charming vintage carriage. If you don't do this when in Norway, you're missing out!

  1. Relax in a Sauna by the Fjord

This was one of the highlights of our trip. Picture a wood-fired sauna with floor-to-ceiling views of the fjord, with the option to step straight out and swim. Book the sauna experience here.

  1. Bike or hike along the valley

The Flåm Valley has trails and bike paths for every level, passing farms, waterfalls and quiet roads with barely another soul in sight. It's an easy way to slow down and take in the mountain scenery at your own pace, whether you're out for an hour or a full afternoon.

  1. Day-trip to Aurland

Just a short ride from Flåm, Aurland is even smaller and quieter. Stop for lunch at hotel Aurlandsfjord overlooking the fjord, then visit Aurlandsskoen, a local shoemaker with a history that goes back generations.

  1. Board a Scenic Boat along the UNESCO Fjord

Cruise the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord (a UNESCO World Heritage site) with Norway's Best, operators of one of the world's first electric fjord cruises. A quiet, low-impact way to see the cliffs and waterfalls up close.

  1. Enjoy the view from Stegastein viewpoint

Perched high above the fjord, this striking platform extends out over the cliffside for one of the best panoramic shots of mountain scenery you'll find anywhere in Norway.

Make it easy - book a combined tour

Stegastein, the Flåm Railway, and a fjord cruise can all be booked together, an easy way to lock in the highlights without juggling separate tickets.

Where to Eat & Drink in Flåm

Utsyn is a restaurant offering a breathtaking view of Flåm and the mountains. The menu is locally driven, supports local farmers and offers seasonal dining.

Arven rounds out the food scene with relaxed, locally-driven menus, good options for a proper sit-down dinner after a day outdoors.

Ægir Brewpub

Ægir BrewPub feels like stepping into a Viking longhouse, complete with house-brewed beer and hearty Norwegian vibes. If you’re having a hard time deciding which beer to get, try their beer tasting tray.

Flåm Bakery is a must. Imagine a warm cinnamon bun here, ideally with coffee and a fjord in the sun.

How to get to Flåm

It's easy to reach Flåm without a car and the journey itself, a slow vintage train going through fjords and over mountain passes, is half the experience.

The most common route is Oslo or Bergen to Myrdal on the Bergen Line, then change and board the Flåm Railway for the final descent into the village, passing waterfalls and lush landscapes. A journey that will take you from city streets to mountain peaks in just a few hours.

Practical Tips for Visiting Flåm

A medium-length weekend (two to three nights) is the sweet spot: enough time without feeling rushed. Pack layers no matter the season, fjord weather shifts quickly and mornings can be cool even at the height of a Norwegian summer.

Late spring through early autumn is the easiest window for visiting Norway, when hiking trails are clear and the fjord cruises run daily, but Flåm has its own quiet magic in shoulder season too and even winter. Fewer crowds, crisp air, same dramatic backdrop and perhaps you’ll even manage to ski. Whichever month you choose, this is one corner of Norway where the scenery does most of the work.

Final Thoughts

Flåm is proof you don't need a long, complicated itinerary to have an unforgettable Norway vacation. A long weekend here is enough to understand why so many travelers call it the most dreamy destination in the country.

Flåm is the kind of stop that stays with you for a lifetime.
